Work-study and disability: rights and aid for RQTH apprentices

A disability is no barrier to work-study — quite the opposite. Apprenticeship for people with a disability benefits from relaxed rules and dedicated aid that often make it more accessible than the standard contract. Here is what you need to know to take advantage of it in 2026.

In short: with an RQTH (recognition of disabled-worker status), apprenticeship becomes an adapted contract: no age limit, a duration that can range from 6 months to 4 years, higher pay if it is extended, adjustments to the workstation and exams, and a disability officer in every CFA. On the employer side, Agefiph pays a hiring grant of up to €3,000. It all starts with filing an RQTH application at the MDPH.

What is an adapted apprenticeship contract?

It is a standard apprenticeship contract, but with several rules adjusted to the apprentice's disability. To benefit from it, you must be recognised as a disabled worker (RQTH) by the rights and autonomy commission (CDAPH), through an application filed with the Departmental Centre for People with Disabilities (MDPH) of your area.

Three major relaxations set this contract apart:

  • No age limit. The 29-year cap of the standard contract does not apply: you can start an apprenticeship at any age.
  • An adjustable duration. The contract can be shortened to 6 months or extended up to 4 years (instead of 3 years maximum), depending on the needs linked to the disability.
  • An adaptable pace, with possible adjustments to working time and the organisation of the training.

In adapted apprenticeship, the rule adapts to the person — not the other way round. That is the whole spirit of the scheme.

What pay and what adjustments?

Pay follows the standard apprenticeship scale (a percentage of the SMIC based on age and the year of the contract). To find out your future salary, use our pay calculator.

The specific feature: in the event of an extension of the contract linked to the disability, the percentage of the SMIC taken into account is increased by 15 points during the extension period. An apprentice paid 67% of the SMIC would, for example, move up to 82%.

Beyond pay, several adjustments secure the path:

  • Exam adjustments: extra time, assistance, adapted equipment.
  • Workstation adaptation: equipment, specific software, reinforced mentoring, interpreting or braille transcription.
  • Disability officer in the CFA: mandatory in every centre since the law of 5 September 2018, they coordinate the adjustments and act as a link with the employer.

What financial aid in 2026?

The apprentice with a disability combines the ordinary financial aid (housing, mobility, meals) with specific schemes run by Agefiph (private sector) or the FIPHFP (public sector). These aids mainly target the employer, but they remove a real barrier to hiring.

The hiring grant is renewable if the contract is extended (additional qualification, higher level or exam failure). Before signing, always check the up-to-date conditions on the Agefiph website.

How do you get started?

The process comes down to four steps:

  1. File your RQTH application at the MDPH if you have not already done so (processing can take several months: plan ahead).
  2. Choose your training and your trade — explore the work-study trades to target a sector that is hiring.
  3. Look for your contract among the work-study offers and report your RQTH to the disability officer of the CFA you have in mind.
  4. Mobilise the aid: the employer activates the Agefiph grant, you activate the ordinary aid.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an age limit for an apprenticeship with an RQTH?

No. Apprenticeship is open from age 16 and, for someone recognised as a disabled worker (RQTH), there is no upper age limit. The cap of 29 (until the 30th birthday) that applies to the standard apprenticeship contract does not concern apprentices with a disability.

How long can an adapted apprenticeship contract last?

The duration adapts to the disability: it can be shortened to 6 months or extended up to 4 years, versus 3 years maximum as a general rule. During the extension period, pay is increased by 15 percentage points of the SMIC.

What Agefiph aid is there for a disabled apprentice in 2026?

Agefiph pays the employer a hiring grant for apprenticeship, from €500 for a 6-month contract up to €3,000 depending on duration, renewable if the contract is extended. It also funds, case by case, the adaptation of the workstation (equipment, software, mentoring, interpreting).

How do you obtain an RQTH?

The recognition of disabled-worker status is granted by the CDAPH, after filing an application with the Departmental Centre for People with Disabilities (MDPH) of your area. It opens access to the specific apprenticeship measures.

Who helps a disabled apprentice within the CFA?

Every apprentice training centre (CFA) has a disability officer, mandatory since the law of 5 September 2018. They support the apprentice, coordinate the adjustments to the training path and act as a link with the employer and the funding bodies.
