The apprenticeship contract

One foot at school, one foot in a company.

The apprenticeship contract (contrat d'apprentissage) lets you prepare a recognised qualification — from CAP to a five-year master's — while working in a company that pays for your training. Here are the essentials, jargon-free.

Who is apprenticeship for?

The apprenticeship contract is open to anyone aged 16 to 29 inclusive. Exceptions apply: from age 15 after completing year 9 (3e), or with no upper age limit for people with a disability, top-level athletes, or those launching a business that requires a specific qualification.

How long does it last?

Contract length matches the training cycle, usually 1 to 3 years (CAP, vocational Bac, BTS, BUT, bachelor's, master's, engineering degree…). The rhythm averages 2 days at school and 3 days in the company, but this varies by qualification.

How much will I earn?

Minimum pay is set as a percentage of the SMIC (French minimum wage). It depends on your age and the year of your contract. Collective agreements or your employer may pay more.

Your rights — the same as any employee

Three steps to get started

  1. Find a company. Search on superalternance, apply, attend the interview. This is the longest step — plan 3 to 6 months ahead.
  2. Enrol at a CFA. The CFA can also help you find a company. The contract must be signed within 3 months of the training start date at the latest.
  3. Sign the contract (Cerfa FA13). The employer sends it to its OPCO for approval. You receive a copy: it's official.
