The apprenticeship contract (contrat d'apprentissage) lets you prepare a recognised qualification — from CAP to a five-year master's — while working in a company that pays for your training. Here are the essentials, jargon-free.
The apprenticeship contract is open to anyone aged 16 to 29 inclusive. Exceptions apply: from age 15 after completing year 9 (3e), or with no upper age limit for people with a disability, top-level athletes, or those launching a business that requires a specific qualification.
Contract length matches the training cycle, usually 1 to 3 years (CAP, vocational Bac, BTS, BUT, bachelor's, master's, engineering degree…). The rhythm averages 2 days at school and 3 days in the company, but this varies by qualification.
Minimum pay is set as a percentage of the SMIC (French minimum wage). It depends on your age and the year of your contract. Collective agreements or your employer may pay more.
| Apprentice's age | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 18 | 27 % SMIC | 39 % SMIC | 55 % SMIC |
| 18 to 20 | 43 % SMIC | 51 % SMIC | 67 % SMIC |
| 21 to 25 | 53 % SMIC | 61 % SMIC | 78 % SMIC |
| 26 and over | 100 % SMIC | 100 % SMIC | 100 % SMIC |
