Every month, thousands of work-study students miss out on aid they are actually entitled to: the prime d'activité. Little known and often confused with the RSA, it can add up to several dozen euros a month for those who meet the conditions.
In short: a work-study student can receive the prime d'activité if they are at least 18 and earn more than about 78% of the net SMIC (around €1,100 net per month in 2026) during the three months preceding the claim. The prime is never automatic: you must apply on caf.fr and then declare your income every quarter. The amount depends on your resources and household; for many single work-study students, it falls between a few dozen and around a hundred euros a month.
What is the prime d'activité?
The prime d'activité is an allowance paid by the CAF (or the MSA for the agricultural scheme) designed to top up the income of people who work but earn little. It is non-taxable and can be combined with a salary. Since both apprenticeships and professionalization contracts are paid, they count as professional activity: a work-study student can therefore claim it, subject to conditions.
Unlike the RSA, the prime d'activité rewards working: the more earned income you receive (up to a certain ceiling), the more attractive the prime can be.
What are the conditions for a work-study student in 2026?
Two rules set students, apprentices and work-study students apart from other employees:
- Be at least 18. A minor apprentice does not qualify, even if paid.
- Earn more than 78% of the net SMIC, i.e. about €1,100 net per month in 2026, averaged over the last three months. This is the condition that most often blocks eligibility: a young work-study student or one early in their course, paid at 43% or 53% of the SMIC, falls below the threshold and is not eligible.
The general conditions also apply: living in France on a stable basis and being French or legally resident. The 78% threshold follows every SMIC revaluation; since the minimum wage rose on 1 June 2026, the exact figure changes during the year. For the up-to-date number, rely on the official CAF simulator rather than an estimate.
How much can you expect?

The calculation combines a base flat-rate amount (638,28 € for a single person since 1 April 2026), a fraction of your earned income and possible bonuses, from which your resources are deducted. The result therefore varies greatly from one situation to another. As a guide:
| Work-study student's situation | Net monthly income | Estimated prime |
|---|---|---|
| Single apprentice, below the threshold | < €1,100 | €0 (not eligible) |
| Single work-study student | ≈ €1,100 | a few dozen euros |
| Single work-study student | ≈ €1,200 | ≈ €80 to €100 |
| Work-study student living as a couple or with a child | variable | household-based calculation |
These rough figures do not replace a personalised calculation: the prime takes the whole household into account (partner, children, other allowances). An APL benefit received, for example, is partly factored into your resources.
How do you apply?
The process is entirely online and free:
- Create or open your account on caf.fr (or msa.fr).
- Use the "prime d'activité" simulator: in a few minutes it tells you whether you are eligible and for what amount.
- Submit the claim if the result is positive.
- Declare your income every three months (quarterly resources declaration). The amount is "frozen" for the quarter, then recalculated.
Beware: without a quarterly declaration, payment stops automatically. Also remember to reapply if your pay rises from one contract year to the next and goes above the threshold.
The prime d'activité, one of several aids
The prime d'activité is just one lever. If your work-study salary stays tight, combine it with the other schemes: housing aid (APL, Mobili-Jeune, Visale), driving-licence aid, meals or transport. See the full list on our financial aid page. To understand how your pay is calculated and where that famous percentage of the SMIC comes from, our guide understanding your work-study pay explains everything, and the pay simulator gives you your monthly net updated for June 2026.
Finally, if you are still looking for your contract, it is in spring and summer that work-study offers are most plentiful: a slightly higher starting salary may be just what pushes you over the 78% threshold and unlocks the prime.
