Starting your apprenticeship without a company: the 3-month rule

You have been accepted onto your programme but no company has signed yet? Good news: in apprenticeship, you do not have to wait for the contract to start classes.

In short: a person aged 16 to 29 can enrol in a CFA without an employer and follow the training for a maximum of 3 months under the status of vocational training trainee, while securing an apprenticeship contract. As soon as you sign, the contract length is reduced by the months already completed. It is a real second window to avoid losing a year.

What does the law say about enrolling in a CFA without a contract?

Article L6222-12-1 of the Labour Code states it explicitly: anyone aged 16 to 29 (or from 15 if they have finished lower secondary school) who has not yet been hired may begin an apprenticeship training cycle for a maximum of three months. During this period, the training centre helps them find an employer.

In other words, the start of term is not a cut-off: you keep your place and keep searching, instead of putting everything on hold.

What is your status during these three months?

You become a vocational training trainee. In practice:

  • you have no employer, so no pay during this period;
  • your social protection (health insurance, workplace accident cover during training) is provided through your CFA enrolment;
  • you receive the centre's support to target companies and prepare your applications;
  • no registration with France Travail is required to benefit from this status.

Entering training without a contract is not a failure: it is a status set out by law, designed to give you time to find the right company.

What happens to the contract length when you sign?

You can sign an apprenticeship contract at any time during these three months. The rule is simple: the contract length (or apprenticeship period) is reduced by the number of months already elapsed since the start of the training cycle. So you do not extend your studies.

SituationWhat happens
You sign after 1 month of classesContract shortened by about 1 month
You sign after 2 monthsContract shortened by about 2 months
No contract after 3 monthsEnd of trainee status for this cycle

Note: if, later on, an apprentice loses their employer mid-way, the CFA is obliged to maintain the training for 6 months and help them find a new company. These are two different schemes, but both point the same way: securing your path.

How to maximise your chances?

The three-month window goes by fast: you need to keep moving from the very first day of class.

  1. Keep applying every week, without waiting — browse our apprenticeship offers and follow up regularly.
  2. Lean on the CFA: company-relations officers, partners, alumni. The contract often comes through them.
  3. Polish your applications and tracking, using the method for finding a company.
  4. Master the framework of the work-study contract to reassure a recruiter during the interview.

The key takeaway

Do not give up your year because the company is slow to come. Start the training, make the most of the trainee status and the three months to sign, and keep up the pace in your search. The place is yours: all that is left is to find the company.

Frequently asked questions

Can you start a work-study programme without having signed a contract?

Yes. French law allows anyone aged 16 to 29 (or from 15 after lower secondary school) to begin the training cycle in a CFA without an employer, for a maximum of 3 months, while looking for a company.

What is my status during this period?

You are a vocational training trainee. You are not an employee and therefore not paid, but your social protection is covered and the CFA helps you find an employer.

What happens when I finally sign my contract?

You can sign at any time. The duration of your contract (or apprenticeship period) is then reduced by the number of months already spent in training since the start of the cycle.

What if I find no company within the 3 months?

Beyond the legal deadline you can no longer continue as a trainee for that cycle in principle. Talk to the CFA: some offer alternatives (reorientation, full-time schooling) and keep mobilising their network of partner companies.

Does this rule apply to the professionalisation contract?

No, this scheme concerns the apprenticeship contract. The professionalisation contract requires an employer from the outset: training begins with the contract.
