In short: the métallurgie (metals and engineering) branch reports a need for around 200,000 hires a year through to 2035, and the Pôles formation de l'UIMM network already trains close to 39,000 apprentices every year, with 3,500 trainers. The jobs under most pressure in 2026 are maintenance, machining, boilermaking, automation and electrical engineering. Why is industry a winning bet for an apprenticeship?
Three forces are converging. First, demographics: retirements are emptying workshops of their experienced hands. Then technological change — robotics, sensors, predictive maintenance, additive manufacturing — creating roles that did not exist ten years ago. Finally, reindustrialisation: site decarbonisation, batteries, hydrogen, aerospace and defence are all driving demand.
The result: while other sectors hire at a trickle, industry still struggles to fill its vacancies. That is good news for an apprentice.

Which industrial jobs are hiring most in 2026?
Demand is concentrated in technical roles, at every qualification level:
- Industrial maintenance: maintenance technician, electromechanical technician, predictive maintenance technician. The most in-demand job of all, across every sector (food processing, chemicals, energy, automotive).
- Machining and manufacturing: CNC operator then machining technician, setter, CAD/CAM programmer.

Which apprenticeship courses, from CAP to engineer?
Industry has one distinctive feature: it offers a complete ladder. You can come in with a CAP and leave as an engineer, without ever stepping outside the apprenticeship route.

How much does an apprentice earn in industry?
The baseline is the statutory apprenticeship pay scale: a percentage of the SMIC (€1,867.02 gross as of 1 June 2026) that rises with age and year of contract. But industry often goes further.
The métallurgie collective agreement frequently sets higher contractual minimums, on top of which come sector-specific extras: shift bonus, travel allowance, on-site expenses, profit-sharing and incentive schemes — sums that weigh heavily on an apprentice's payslip. How do you land an industrial apprenticeship?
Course intakes target the September 2026 start, and many industrial CFAs are still recruiting in July and August. A few habits worth adopting:
- Target the sector's own CFAs. The Pôles formation UIMM and industrial CFAs often have a pool of partner companies: enrolling already brings you closer to a contract.
- Do not overlook SMEs. Aerospace subcontractors, precision engineering, surface treatment: they recruit with less fanfare than the big groups, but they train exceptionally well.
- Widen your search geographically. The industrial heartlands (Loire, the North, Alsace, Occitanie, Pays de la Loire) offer far more opportunities than the big service-sector cities.
