You are over 30 and considering alternance to upskill, reconvert or pursue a doctorate? Good news: the apprenticeship contract remains accessible, but through specific exemptions set by the French Labor Code. Here is the 2026 panorama, profile by profile, with the steps to follow for each case.
In short: the general rule sets the limit at 29 years completed (art. L. 6222-2 of the Labor Code). But five exemptions open apprenticeship beyond that: RQTH, high-level athlete, business creator or buyer, doctoral candidate, and higher diploma after termination. For under 30s, the contract remains the normal route; for older profiles, these exemptions cover most career change or specialization situations.
What is the general rule in 2026?
Article L. 6222-2 of the Labor Code sets the framework:
- Minimum age: 16 years old, or 15 years completed if the 9th grade (3ème) has been completed.
- Maximum age: 29 years completed (i.e. until the day before turning 30).
This limit applies to all apprenticeship contracts signed in France, across all sectors. Failure to comply with the age limit may result in reclassification as a fixed-term or permanent contract (CDD/CDI), with the corresponding social contributions and labor law. Hence the importance of identifying the applicable exemption before signing.
For a first diploma, a typical career change, or a return to training after a few years of work, the simplest is often to be under 30 — explore our alternance offers and our job sheets to calibrate your project.
The 5 exemptions that open apprenticeship after 30
1. Disabled worker (RQTH) — no age limit
This is the best-known exemption. As soon as you are recognized as a disabled worker by the CDAPH (through a file submitted to the MDPH of your department), no age limit applies. The contract can be reduced to 6 months or extended up to 4 years, with a 15-point salary increase if extended beyond 3 years.
The Agefiph complements the scheme on the employer side: hiring aid, financing of workstation adjustments, mandatory disability referent in each CFA. The details are in our article Alternance and disability: aids and rights of RQTH apprentices.
2. High-level athlete — no age limit
Athletes on the ministerial list (national teams, France centers, Espoirs) can sign an apprenticeship contract at any age. The contract can be extended up to 4 years to account for training and competition constraints. This is the most used exemption in sport-study programs, where the dual career is a separate subject.
3. Business creator or buyer — no age limit
You have a business creation or takeover project and the diploma being prepared is directly required for this project? Apprenticeship is open without age limit, without any previous diploma condition. The supporting document to provide is usually a business plan or a file demonstrating the link between the training and the project. The K-bis (business registration) is not required at signing.
4. Doctorate (level 8 RNCP) — no age limit
The doctorate is explicitly eligible for apprenticeship, as specified in article L. 6222-1 of the Labor Code. The contract is concluded for 3 years renewable, full-time, and alternates thesis work in the laboratory and assignments in the company. The CIFRE route (Convention industrielle de formation par la recherche) remains the best known framework, but it is not the only one: many theses in human sciences, law or engineering are now done through apprenticeship.
5. New higher diploma after termination — up to 35 years completed
If you have already prepared a diploma through apprenticeship and your contract was terminated for a reason beyond your control (temporary inaptitude, judicial liquidation of the company, employer's fault), you can chain a new apprenticeship contract up to 35 years completed, provided you target a higher-level diploma than the one already obtained.
⚠️ The deadline is strict: 12 months maximum between the termination and the signing of the new contract.
Summary table of exemptions
| Situation | Maximum age | Contract duration | Main supporting document |
|---|---|---|---|
| General rule | 29 years completed | 6 months to 3 years | — |
| RQTH | No limit | 6 months to 4 years | MDPH notification |
| High-level athlete | No limit | Up to 4 years | Ministerial list |
| Business creator / buyer | No limit | 6 months to 3 years | Business plan |
| Doctorate | No limit | 3 years renewable | Registration in doctoral school |
| New diploma after termination | 35 years completed | According to targeted diploma | Less than 12 months between both contracts |
What alternative if you do not fall into any exemption?
For a career change after 30 outside these five cases, two main routes remain open:
- The professionalization contract: open to job seekers without age limit, with remuneration at 100% of the minimum wage (SMIC) from age 26 and training paid for by the OPCO. Ideal for a quick upskilling on a specific trade.
- The reconversion period (since 2026): allows a private-sector employee to train through alternance without resigning, with salary maintained internally. Details are in our article Reconversion period 2026: train through alternance without resigning.

How to build your file step by step?
- Check your eligibility for one of the five exemptions above. The most frequent case remains RQTH: if you are in a recognized (or in the process of being recognized) disability situation, start there.
- Identify the targeted certification: a diploma registered with the RNCP or a CQP. For a career change, target a professional title from level 5 to 7 (bac+2 to bac+5) depending on your project.
- Find a CFA that offers the training and accept your admission. Our search page lists the main alternance programs.
- Find a host company willing to sign the contract. Alternance offers and the guide find an alternance company speed up the process.
- Gather the supporting documents specific to your exemption (MDPH notification, ministerial certificate, business plan, doctoral registration certificate, terminated previous contract) before signing.
- Sign the CERFA and make the DPAE (declaration prior to hiring). Since the 2026 reform, no more Dreets registration, but a posteriori control remains possible.
Apprenticeship after 30 is no longer an administrative headache: it is a right, provided you identify the right exemption and document it properly. CFAs, OPCOs and Cap emploi are your first contacts to secure the setup.
Key takeaways
- General rule: apprenticeship open from 16 to 29 years completed (art. L. 6222-2).

- 35 years completed: specific cap for a new diploma in apprenticeship after termination beyond your control, within 12 months.
- No exemption?: the professionalization contract and the reconversion period remain solid alternatives, with no age condition.
- Good reflex: identify the exemption before signing, gather the supporting documents, and get support from your CFA, your OPCO or Cap emploi.
