Haven't signed your contract yet and the start of term is approaching? Don't panic: summer is far from a dead period for work-study. It is even a second strategic window to land a contract.
In short: in July and August, spots open up because of withdrawals and many companies hire late. Bet on speculative applications, target sectors that hire all year round, and remember that you generally have three months after classes start to sign your apprenticeship. Stay active: competition is lower than in spring.
Is it really too late to search in summer?
No. The work-study search peaks in spring (April-June), but two phenomena reopen the game in summer:
- Withdrawals. Candidates admitted elsewhere give up a signed contract, freeing positions already budgeted by the company.
- Late needs. Some companies only launch their recruitment in July, even through September-October, as their projects unfold.
In July and August there are fewer published offers, but also far fewer candidates in the running. A polished application often has more impact than in spring.
Which companies still hire in July and August?
Not every sector slows down in summer. Some stay under pressure all year long and gladly welcome last-minute profiles.

What method should you adopt to move fast?
In summer, speed wins. Focus your efforts where the return is most direct:
- Target the hidden market. Around 74 % of applications registered on La Bonne Alternance (France Travail) in the first quarter of 2026 were speculative. Every month, the service identifies nearly 300 000 companies with high hiring potential: send them a targeted application.
- Respond fast to recent offers. Sort by date and apply within 24-48 hours, including our work-study offers.
- Activate your network and your CFA. Training centres often keep partner companies on standby until the start of term.
- Always follow up. A polite follow-up 5 to 7 days after sending often makes the difference when deadlines are tight.
- Prepare a short pitch and stay flexible. Two or three sentences summing up your project, the qualification you are aiming for and your immediate availability often tip a busy recruiter in your favour. Mention your mobility too: accepting a position a little farther away clearly widens your options in summer.

What if the start of term comes before the contract?
Keep your place in training: in apprenticeship, you generally have a three-month deadline after classes start to sign your contract. So you can begin classes and keep searching in parallel. On Parcoursup, apprenticeship wishes stay open until 8 septembre 2026, and admission outside Parcoursup remains possible all year long.
